The Store as a Stage.
Retail · Roman Thomas
A retail space does not want to be snapped, it wants to be read. Atmosphere and material make the picture, not the fully stocked shelf.
Atmosphere instead of display
A store is a built stage. Light, material, the way people move through it, everything is placed so that a space tells a brand’s story. My task is not to show as much merchandise as possible, but the mood in which that merchandise stands.
That is why I tend to photograph retail spaces empty. Few people, clear surfaces, letting the material speak. A stone floor, a wooden wall, a band of light that guides the eye.
Atmosphere and detail. Without postcard kitsch.
For brands that are precise
I have photographed retail spaces for brands in the premium segment, from KaDeWe in Berlin to Galeries Lafayette to Aston Martin. As different as the brands are, the question remains the same. What makes this place unmistakable, and how does the picture become calm enough for you to see it.
Why this belongs here
Retail is architecture with an intention. This is where image, space and identity meet head-on. A retail space is a brand presence in built form. That is exactly what I photograph.
